Sometimes with the chaos of the end of a school year, a spring sports team going deep into state competition can get lost. After all, exams are very important and making plans to spend time with family all summer is even moreso.
During this time, the varsity golf team was at Green Island Country Club in Columbus preparing and competing in the state golf championships.
After a tough start on the front nine, the boys' team played well and consistent on the back nine to place eighth in the state with a score of 315. The team had four freshmen (Lindsey Cordell, Carter Anderson, Alec Patterson, and Hank Crawford), a sophomore (Scott Spyra), and a senior (Peter Hinnant). It is important to point out that Peter, now a member of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, came back after graduation to compete in this competition.
The girls' team finished second in the state. They were only behind by three shots after day one. Unfortunately, rain cancelled day two and the girls did not get the chance to cut into that lead. Sophia Kalusche ('18) also finished second to now UGA enrollee Elisa Yang in the individual competition. Our other three girls, Stacy Chen ('18), Tammy Yan ('19), and Liza Frisbee ('20) gained valuable experience that should help in this year's competition. Tammy and Liza shot their best nines of the year on the front firing a 43 and Stacy finished strong on the back with a 47.
Overall, the golf team has 9 of the 10 competitors coming back this spring. The future is bright and these student-athletes work very hard every day. I am looking forward to a great school year, but I am also looking forward to a great spring!
Go Tigers!
