Through the special Darlington Connects blog series, we are proud to showcase the stories, connections, and lasting impact of a community that continues to embody Darlington’s mission and values long after graduation. Today, we hear from Alumni Council member Oliver York ('06, LD ’15).

When Oliver York arrived at Darlington as a senior from Richmond Hill, Ga., he carried with him the identity he had built at Richmond Hill: a standout athlete known for his strength on the football field and track. But what he found at Darlington would expand his perspective far beyond athletics and ultimately reshape how he defined success.

At first, it was the facilities that caught his attention. The Huffman Athletic Center made an immediate impression. After years of competing in visiting locker rooms, Oliver remembers thinking he had never seen anything like it. Yet it did not take long for something more meaningful to stand out.

What truly set Darlington apart was the community.

Coming from a larger public school environment, Oliver was struck by the way relationships worked at Darlington. Students connected across grade levels. Coaches and teachers invested deeply in their students. Excellence was not just expected; it was cultivated collectively. Everyone was pushing not only for their own success but also for the success of those around them.

“At Richmond Hill, I stood out and was known for football and track,” Oliver said. “When I came to Darlington and didn’t stand out as much, I learned the importance of cheering for and supporting my teammates and friends.”

That shift proved formative. In an environment where the bar was set high, Oliver learned that being part of a team meant more than individual recognition. It meant understanding when to step forward and when to support, a lesson that would stay with him long after graduation.

After Darlington, Oliver continued his football career at Samford University. There, he experienced the next level of competition and quickly realized how different the game became. College football, he says, operated more like a business, demanding a level of commitment that forced him to reflect on what he truly wanted.

“I would have given myself fully to the sport,” he said, “but after two years, I realized I would rather be a college student than a college athlete.”

That realization led him to a new chapter. After reconnecting with fellow alum Bau Cherry ('07, LD ’20), Oliver found himself drawn to the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, he discovered the balance he had been searching for, a fresh start where he could fully embrace the college experience beyond athletics.

Still, some of his most meaningful memories trace back to his time as a dorm student at Darlington. He recalls simple but lasting moments: Sunday buffet runs to Fibbers, late-night conversations, and watching a fellow student from Africa experience snow for the first time. Dorm life instilled discipline, but just as importantly, it built friendships that have endured.
The lessons he carried forward are rooted in those experiences. Be a good teammate, on and off the field. Recognize when to take the lead and when to play a supporting role. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

“Make the most of the moments when they come,” Oliver said. “The hard things that confront you now are opportunities that will make an impact in the future.”
Today, Oliver brings those same principles into his professional and personal life. As a business transformation manager at Capgemini, he leads supply chain optimization initiatives for Fortune 100 companies, helping organizations perform at a higher level through strategic change. At home, he is a father of two and the proud owner of a basset hound named Elvis.

Though his path has evolved, the foundation remains the same.

Oliver’s journey is a reflection of what Darlington does at its best: it challenges students to grow beyond how they first define themselves, instills a commitment to excellence, and teaches the value of lifting others along the way. Today, as a member of the Alumni Council, he continues to live out those lessons, supporting the next generation just as others supported him.
