Boarding #StudentSpotlight: Olivia Chen

A Darlington student is made up of many things. None of which is average. We help our students develop their interests, passions and pursuits, because we believe every individual has something to contribute. We also believe that only when you're 100% you, are you 100% Darlington.

Here at Darlington, every student’s path is different. We think that's a good thing.

Let’s get to know Olivia Chen, a four-year boarding student from Shanghai, China, who says her experience at Darlington has given her the confidence to step outside of her comfort zone.

When you think of Darlington, what three words come to mind first?
Adventurous, joyful, and unique

What's your favorite restaurant in Rome?

What are you involved in?
I'm the president of Green Team club, I've been a student representative of Student Council for three years, and I play tennis.

If you play sports, who is your favorite coach?
Tennis - Coach Craig

If you are involved in fine arts, what is your favorite activity and why?
My favorite activity would be pottery because I never really tried it and it is so much fun.

What's your favorite place on campus and why?
My favorite place is the trails behind the science building because I love walking around the trails with Mr. Kinney, Ms. Haynes, and my friends and learning about new plants, bugs, and insects while walking.

Who's your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teachers are Mr. Kinney and Ms. Haynes because they make learning exciting and engaging. Instead of only using textbooks, we learn through outdoor activities and projects, which makes the lessons more meaningful and enjoyable for me.

What’s your favorite thing about Darlington?
What I love most about Darlington is its inclusive community. I’ve met people from so many different cultures, and along the way I’ve been able to explore and experience new things I never would have tried before.

Describe an experience that you've had at Darlington that you couldn't have had anywhere else.
Having RUMPUS with such intense house spirit helped me bond so much with the girls in my house. From doing Lip Sync performances to creating different themes and putting together fun, creative costumes, the whole experience gave us such a strong sense of collective pride and unity, something uniquely Darlington that I don’t think I could experience anywhere else.

What are some of the ways you've grown since you first came to Darlington?
Over time, I’ve become far less afraid to push beyond my comfort zone. I always look for ways to challenge myself, whether that’s taking on demanding courses or getting involved in different clubs and activities. I try to give every opportunity a fair chance, and it’s opened the door to experiences I never expected.

What is your dream job?
Environmental anthropologist
