Observational drawing is not just about reproducing an image, but about truly seeing what you are drawing, analyzing what is accurate and what needs to be adjusted. For Art 1 students, this challenging approach addressed not only rendering the chosen subjects accurately, but also challenged each student to truly "see" the lights, darks and cast shadows accurately. It highlighted the process of consciously observing and analyzing the subjects with the goal of self-critique. It was wonderful to see each student meet these challenges and, while doing so, see their drawing skills grow exponentially.
