Darlington School’s eighth-graders recently embarked on an unforgettable journey across Georgia, immersing themselves in the state’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Their travels took them to iconic locations, including Warm Springs, Savannah, Macon, Pooler, Cumberland Island, and the Okefenokee Swamp.
Throughout their adventure, students explored significant historical landmarks:
Savannah: Their time in Georgia’s oldest city included stops at Colonial Wormsloe Historic Site, where they strolled beneath towering live oaks, and Fort Jackson, where they experienced a cannon-firing demonstration. They also visited the historic First African Baptist Church, one of the oldest Black congregations in North America, learning about its role in the Underground Railroad. On the Georgia Queen Riverboat, students enjoyed a scenic cruise along the Savannah River , witnessing America’s largest seaport in action and learning about the vital role of the shipping industry in Savannah’s economy. As night fell, the group embarked on a spine-chilling trolley ghost tour, hearing Savannah’s famous haunted tales and exploring the city’s mysterious and eerie past.
Along the way, the group enjoyed delicious meals, shared plenty of laughter, and created lasting memories with friends and teachers. This immersive trip not only brought history to life but also deepened their appreciation for Georgia’s diverse heritage and landscapes.
