The goal of this fall's 3-5 grade Lacrosse Club was to introduce young players to the fundamentals of the sport in a fun and supportive environment. Even though our practices focused on developing basic skills like passing, catching, cradling, scooping, and shooting, we also wanted to make sure to emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
Coaches used collaborative games and drills to keep players engaged and allow for plenty of practice in handling the lacrosse stick and ball. We used smaller fields, simplified rules and tennis balls instead of lacrosse balls to ensure safety as the students learned the fundamentals. As each player progressed, they gradually learned operative and cooperative direction, catching, scooping, passing, and scoring. We gradually incorporated competitive play, preparing them for more structured league play. We hope this will lead to a fully-padded middle school lacrosse program.
The goal for the coaches and students organizing this program was to build a solid lacrosse foundation, encourage a love for the game and foster a positive environment for skill development. We want young lacrosse players to feel confident and supported, and our hope is that they will carry their love for lacrosse forward for many years to come at Darlington. Go Tigers!
