A major part of our social studies curriculum in third grade centers around geography and the beginning of the year is an awesome time to work on our map skills. We utilize our globes, wall maps and huge maps of the USA and World in the Commons in Thatcher. However, one of the best ways to figure out how to read a map and a map key is to work together in groups, study the maps together and find answers together. Third-graders will continue to refine and enhance their map skills throughout the year.
For this activity the third-graders were divided into groups and given two very different types of challenges. The first set of challenges involved reading a map and using a compass rose to answer the questions presented. The second set of challenges involved reading a map but this time using the map key to solve the questions presented.
