Young Alumni Council: Preparing the Next Generation of Darlington Grads

This fall, Darlington’s Young Alumni Council thoughtfully organized a virtual three-part Senior Transition Panel series designed to equip the Class of 2026 with insight, perspective, and confidence as they prepare for life beyond the Lakeside. Drawing on their own Darlington foundations and post-graduate experiences, young alumni shared practical advice and honest reflections on the journey from high school to college and beyond.

The series opened with “Journey to College,” featuring Carson Barnes (’17), Elijah McKoy (’17) and Bob Ledbetter III (’16). Panelists encouraged seniors to be intentional during their final year at Darlington while navigating the college application process. Conversations centered on time management, identifying the right college fit, and maintaining balance during a demanding season. Their relatable experiences offered reassurance and clarity to students standing on the threshold of this major transition.

The second session, “Navigating College Life,” brought together Bob Ledbetter III (’16), Rand Smith (’18), and Smith Wheeler (’19) for an open discussion about the realities of college. Panelists shared candid insights on building community, utilizing campus resources, managing academic expectations and prioritizing personal well-being. Their honesty underscored both the challenges and opportunities that come with newfound independence and responsibility.

The series concluded with “Post-College Connections,” featuring Noah Katz (’14) and Mitchel Thurston (’14). This panel highlighted the long-term value of relationships, mentorship, and professional networks. Panelists emphasized how Darlington connections continue to shape their personal and professional lives, reinforcing the enduring strength of the Darlington community well beyond graduation.

Together, these panels created meaningful dialogue around the questions and concerns most relevant to Darlington seniors. Students were invited to submit questions in advance, allowing for thoughtful, dynamic conversations tailored to their needs. The result was a supportive environment where seniors could learn directly from alumni who had recently navigated the same path.

Darlington is deeply grateful to the Young Alumni Council speakers who generously volunteered their time and energy to invest in the Class of 2026. Their willingness to step away from busy schedules to mentor and guide current students reflects a strong commitment to service and exemplifies the spirit of giving back that defines Darlington alumni.
