Darlington senior Hayes Parsa and Model sophomore Sarah Schabort claimed the titles of fastest runners in the area when every high school in Floyd County met for the Rome All-Area meet Tuesday at Georgia Highlands.
Parsa and Schabort won the boys and girls races, respectively, as the participating teams made final tune-ups before the upcoming Nov. 1 sectional meets (or, in Unity Christian’s case, the GAPPS state championship Saturday).
In the boys race, Parsa (16:51.7) led a pack of scoring Darlington runners that all finished within the top seven and won the race as a team: Lee Donahue (16:58.3) finished second, Zach Kimani (18.05.1) finished fourth, Gray Smith (18:42.0) finished sixth and Murray Ellington (18:54.9) finished seventh. Tigers eighth-grader Max Burnett (19:09.4) also finished 10th and two other Darlington runners finished in the top 20.
On the girls side, Schabort (20:02.8) led a far more diverse top of the podium; each of the first five positions were claimed by different schools. Behind Schabort were: Rome’s Ava Hall (20:29.3) in second, Darlington’s Cora Fannin (20:37.8) in third, Armuchee’s Ellery McClain (20:43.7) in fourth and Coosa’s Alishia Cook (21:04.0) in fifth.
However, the rest of the top 12 positions were dominated by Rome, which won the girls race as a team. Addie Cordle (22:02.5) finished sixth, and Annabel Chandler (22:52.3), Sara Holloway (22:53.0), Charlee Butler (23.40.2) and Sarah Beth Bushnell (23:45.6) finished back-to-back-to-back-to-back in positions nine-through-12.
Unity Christian will participate in the GAPPS state championship meet Saturday at ONE Church in Fayetteville. The boys team qualified as a group and three girls runners qualified as individuals.
At the All-Area meet, Taylon Waldon (19:54.2) led Unity’s boys with a 19th-place finish and Bella Whitehead (27:22.6) led its girls in sixth.
The six other schools in Floyd County will compete at GHSA sectional meets Nov. 1. Armuchee, Coosa, Model and Pepperell will run at the Class 1A Division I Section 2 meet at East Laurens in East Dublin; Darlington will host the Classes 1A Division I-3A Private Section Section 2 meet; Rome will run in the Class 5A Section 1 meet at Bouckerhart Farm in Fairburn.
