The Art of Discovery

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a new school year, and in the fine arts at Darlington, that excitement comes alive through music, theater, visual arts, and storytelling. From our youngest pre-K artists to our graduating seniors, students will spend the year discovering new talents, designing creative projects, and delighting audiences with their work.

Music
Whether it’s the joy of singing together in the classroom, the thrill of playing in an ensemble, or the pride of stepping onto the concert stage, music offers our students countless opportunities to grow in both skill and confidence. This year promises to be filled with performances that celebrate not only their hard work, but also the heart they pour into every note.

The journey of discovery begins with our fourth-graders, who are selecting their first instruments in band and strings, and continues as several seniors experience Concert Choir for the very first time. For these students, a whole new world is opening — one where they grow as independent musicians while embracing the excitement of ensemble music-making. Though their paths may look very different, the discovery process remains the same: learning, creating, and finding joy through music.

Theater
In theater, discovery is happening the moment a student realizes they can step into someone else’s shoes and bring a story to life. For younger performers, it might begin with the excitement of imagination games, learning how to use their voices and bodies to express emotion, or the laughter that comes with trying something new.

As students grow, discovery deepens into the craft of collaboration — listening, trusting, and building alongside their peers to create something greater than themselves. They experiment with movement, explore character motivation, and even design sets and costumes that help tell the story. These experiences have begun for the 6-8 Drama classroom and extends to the work that the new cast of "Antigone" is doing in the Zelle Black Box. Rehearsals started the Tuesday after Labor Day and the production is set for the weekend on Oct. 17.

Visual Arts
Walk down the halls at Darlington, and you’ll see creativity everywhere. From impressive prints from our younger students to the thoughtful work of Upper School artists, our students’ creations remind us of the many ways art helps them see and shape the world around them. Look out for gallery displays and special showcases throughout the year as well as some added field trip experiences to add to the discovery, design, and delight experiences throughout the year.

Journalism & Storytelling
Our communication arts students are busy capturing the stories of our community through the Jabberwokk yearbook, The Darlingtonian newspaper, and The Inkslinger literary magazine. These projects give students a voice and a platform to share their ideas, celebrate their peers, and preserve the memories of each school year. The Darlingtonian is already busy sharing the highlights of the first home football game against Ridgeland on their Instagram account, which can be found @thedarnews.

A Year of Discovery
As we begin this new season, we invite families, friends, and the community to celebrate the discoveries our students will make in every corner of the arts. The journey through music, theatre, visual arts, and storytelling is one of creativity, courage, and joy — and we can’t wait to share it with you. The seasons of design and delight will follow for winter and spring, providing a full range of experiences for our students and community. Stay tuned for more...
