The Journalism Education Association (JEA) recently named Ethan Pender ('16), communication arts teacher, one of twelve 2025 Rising Stars in recognition for his dedication to scholastic journalism and media advising. He will be recognized at the Fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Nashville this November.

Ethan Pender ('16) has advised the Jabberwokk yearbook, the Darlingtonian student newspaper and the Inkslinger literary magazine at Darlington School since 2022. His passion for scholastic journalism began as a Darlington student, where he served as editor-in-chief of all three publications. Under his leadership as adviser, Darlington's student publications have received numerous awards and recognitions, including recognition for the Jabberwokk and Inkslinger as Pacemaker finalists with the National Scholastic Press Association, Jabberwokk All-Georgia Distinction with the Georgia Scholastic Press Association, numerous recognitions for individual staffers and more. Pender is a certified journalism educator through JEA.

"A proud alumnus of the program himself, Ethan brings a unique perspective to his teaching," said Director of Fine Arts Kim Tunnell. "His personal connection allows him to build strong relationships with students while fostering a deep appreciation for the craft of journalism. His passion is evident in every aspect of his work—from the daily classroom experience to the long hours spent advising student editors and contributors. In just three years, Ethan has grown the program significantly—enhancing student interest, elevating the quality of publications and deepening the program’s connection to our school community. His work is driven by a genuine love for educational journalism and a deep commitment to his alma mater."

Rising Star Awards are presented to advisers who are in their first five years of advising, have shown great dedication to scholastic journalism and have had success advising at least one media program.
