Darlington School is proud to welcome John Trautwein, founder of the Will To Live Foundation, for a powerful and inspiring two-day visit focused on youth mental health and emotional well-being. He will speak to parents on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in Morris Chapel, followed by a student presentation for grades 8-12 on Thursday, April 24, during Upper School Chapel.

“At Darlington, we believe that preparing students for life means addressing not only their academic success, but their emotional health and personal growth,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “John Trautwein’s message reinforces the importance of connection, empathy, and being present for one another. This event reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering a community where every student feels supported, heard, and valued.”

A former Major League Baseball pitcher and successful business executive, Trautwein became a leading mental health advocate after the tragic loss of his 15-year-old son, Will, a bright, talented, and beloved high school freshman. His family’s heartbreak became the driving force behind the Will To Live Foundation, which has reached thousands of students and families across the country with its messages of hope, connection, and resilience.

Trautwein has delivered more than 500 presentations nationwide, sharing his “Life Teammates” message—encouraging young people to be there for one another and to foster open, supportive conversations about mental health. His work has been recognized by CNN, USA Today, Fox Sports, Major League Baseball, and countless schools, churches, and communities. In honor of their efforts, he and his wife, Susie, received the George W. Bush Presidential Point of Light Award.

Janie Hortman (’03, LD ’13), a local professional counselor who helped connect Darlington to Trautwein, said his message is an important one.

“Will To Live’s message brings depression and today’s pressure on kids to a relatable format,” she said. “It is more than just a talk about mental health, focusing on how to normalize talking about it and create a community amongst friends that you can go to to have those conversations. I am hoping the students will really listen and that the parents will come hear him speak—it will open your eyes, make you feel seen, and give you tools to make Darlington even better.”

The evening parent event on April 23 is free and open to any parent in the local community, regardless of whether they have children currently enrolled at Darlington. Trautwein’s talk promises to be deeply moving and eye-opening, offering practical tools for fostering stronger emotional connections between parents and children.
