Boarding #SeniorSpotlight: Ian Stafford

A Darlington student is made up of many things. None of which is average. We help our students develop their interests, passions and pursuits, because we believe every individual has something to contribute. We also believe that only when you're 100% you, are you 100% Darlington.

Here at Darlington, every student’s path is different. We think that's a good thing.

Let’s get to know Ian Stafford, a first-year boarding student from Tryon, N.C., and goalkeeper for the U19 Darlington School Soccer Academy team.

When you think of Darlington, what three words come to mind first?
Accepting, diverse, exceptional

What song reminds you of high school?
"Reminder” - The Weeknd

What's your favorite show to binge watch?
“Peaky Blinders”

What's your favorite restaurant in Rome?
Aventine

What house are you a member of?
Summerbell

What are you involved in?
I play goalkeeper for the U19 Soccer Academy team.

If you play sports, who is your favorite coach and why?
Coach Kevin - he has a great sense of British humor, especially sarcasm.

What's your favorite place on campus and why?
The Lake - especially on warmer days, it's a nice place to be or walk; it’s nice and scenic.

Who's your favorite teacher and why?
Mr. Allen - he's a very chill teacher who wants his students to succeed but take care of themselves first. He's always willing to work with me if I need extra time for assignments or really any help in general.

What’s your favorite thing about Darlington?
My favorite thing about Darlington is that it brings exceptional people together from across the world to share academic and athletic growth and success. Going to school here is a very culturing experience that gives you an opportunity to make lifelong friends.

Describe an experience that you've had at Darlington that you couldn't have had anywhere else.
Being able to support my best friends and house in RUMPUS, and being able to build camaraderie with those that I live with. RUMPUS makes you feel more a part of the school more than any other experience I've had anywhere else.

What are some of the ways you've grown since you first came to Darlington?
I have grown to be more cultured in the ways of life of people who live outside of the United States. I have learned through being a part of Soccer Academy and juggling challenging classes how to develop grit as well as knowing when to give myself grace for failing to exceed expectations. Overall, I would say that I've learned who I am and what I'm capable of from this year at Darlington.

What is your dream job?
Business owner
