Fungi Future Initiative

Part of my Senior Ventures project involves researching fungal technology to develop innovative solutions for reducing plastic pollution. As the sole member of this project, I am dedicated to exploring fungi's potential in breaking down plastics and creating sustainable alternatives to plastic products. My work is guided by a passion for environmental sustainability and a desire to contribute to a greener future.

The Fungi Future Initiative is a project I founded to explore fungal applications in solving the global plastic crisis. My research focuses on harnessing fungi's ability to degrade plastic waste and exploring their role in producing biodegradable materials. I have been actively working with the Darlington Community to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and the role of fungi in reducing pollution. Through presentations, discussions, and student collaboration, I aim to inspire my peers to join the effort to address plastic pollution.

I am fortunate to be mentored by Mrs. Barbara Kuckhoff, who provides invaluable guidance and support for this project. Additionally, I work closely with the Green Team, a passionate group of Darlington students committed to promoting sustainability on campus. Together, we have organized initiatives to integrate fungal technology discussions into environmental programs and have inspired many within our school to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

In addition to research and community engagement, I run a social media account to spread awareness about fungal technology and its potential environmental benefits. To reach a wider audience, my work has also been featured in academic publications like the Curieux Academic Journal (page 174), where I highlight the importance of fungi in tackling plastic pollution. It will soon be shared on a future website.

Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial. Click here to learn more.
