My name is Eddie Ye, and I am a senior boarding student at Darlington. My Senior Ventures Project is the DEIJ-Darlington, which is an eight-month DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice) project that helps people at Darlington to learn about different cultures, such as Hispanic cultures, Asian cultures, and Black cultures. I will do this by designing plenty of engaging activities for Darlington students to participate in and enjoy. It also encourages us to understand and accept these cultures.
At the beginning of the year, to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Mr. Mario Cantin and I hosted a Salsa Dance lesson. This event successfully brought more Darlington students to learn about Hispanic cultures and personally connected to the Hispanic cultures. In addition, I coordinated Holidays Around the World in the chapel in December to share the different ways winter holidays are celebrated in different countries. Events like this allow Darlington students and faculty to better understand each other. Overall, I worked with a lot of events with clubs, such as the Spanish Club, to celebrate their cultures. I work to collaborate with groups on campus to support the important work they are already doing, with the goal of ensuring every member of the Darlington Community feels represented and celebrated.
My plan for the spring is to celebrate Asian-Culture Month, Black History Month, and Women’s History Month by creating more engaging activities to attract students. Throughout the DEIJ project, I hope to promote the idea that Darlington is not just a diverse cultural school, but a place where everyone knows the cultures of each other and can become a warm family. By experiencing some fascinating activities for different cultures, I hope we build a significant sense of brotherhood and sisterhood at Darlington so that everyone can know each other better.
Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial.
