One way we can see the growth of man is through music. It serves as a door to the past and a way to connect to different cultures around the world. Through the use of technology, this important tool has become more accessible to all. At Darlington, students can explore the world of music through tools that allow them to access, create, and engage in ways that were once unimaginable. With the resources available in our classrooms, including innovative technology, students can seamlessly connect to the past and bring their own musical ideas to life.
In the fine arts department, our theme for the fall season is Discovery. Since the invention of the phonograph in 1877, technology has given us the keys to discover the vast and multicultural music kingdom, especially in the classroom.
The ability to listen to past recordings through websites such as YouTube helps students discover a physical connection to the past. Through videos, students are able to see inside a concert hall on a Monday morning, watch performances of operas such as The Magic Flute before lunch, and so much more.
Students are also able to discover their musical and creative passions through technology. They are able to use apps such as Garage Band (Finale, Smart Music, etc.) to compose their own works and hear it in real time; websites such as Chrome Music Lab invite students to create music through simple drawings; and interactive games students are able to practice their theory, composition, and performance skills in a fun and engaging manner.
Not only does technology service the students, teachers are able to benefit from it, too. Music that used to take two weeks to get is now at our fingertips. Lesson ideas from top music educators around the world are available at a click of a button. It has helped create a support system of music educators that are able to share new and innovative ways to teach curriculum to all students no matter their learning styles.
To reiterate, technology has been able to give us the keys to the music kingdom and discover the world around us. A priceless commodity that will give this generation of students the ability to grow their love and knowledge of music in so many different ways.
