My name is Grace Armstrong and my Senior Ventures project is to assist with growing the S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum in grades 1-5. A strong science education is proven to help children develop communication, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Through heavy research, I plan to apply the data I find into lesson plans. Working with Upper School science teachers, these lesson plans will include hands-on experiments in biology, chemistry, and physics to benefit the younger students! I am passionate about S.T.E.M., and I want to share my knowledge and passion with the younger students at Thatcher Hall.
My Darlington mentor is Mr. Kinney. I assisted Ms. Cline and Mrs. Fine with the Insect Expo in Thatcher Hall. I chaperoned the fifth-grade insect hunt and assisted with research and making the tri-fold boards for the event. Mrs. Kuckhoff and I will work together, closer to Halloween, to develop entertaining chemical reactions. Thatcher Hall students will then dive into the reasonings behind how these experiments worked. Through all of these things I hope to influence a stronger focus on the science program in Thatcher Hall!
Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial.
