Darlington to present “12 Angry Jurors”

October 4, 2023 | 868 views

Darlington's fine arts department and the Darlington Players will present "12 Angry Jurors," adapted by Sherman L. Sergel and based on the Emmy award-winning television movie "12 Angry Men," by Reginald Rose. Performances are Oct. 13-15 in the Zelle Black Box Theatre. Showtimes are 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

"The cast and crew are excited to showcase this well-known classic drama for our community this fall," said Shelley Daniel, theater director. "We can’t wait to welcome audiences through the doors of the Zelle Black Box and into our jury room. We are grateful for the opportunity."

In "12 Angry Jurors," a murder trial has ended, closing arguments have been made; now it’s up to a jury of 12 to decide the fate of a 19-year-old boy accused of murdering his father. It’s an open and shut case. Or is it? Tensions rise as bias reveals itself, and 12 very different personalities interact to obstruct their intentions of reaching a unanimous decision.

Can one juror, in their pursuit of justice, save the life of a young man by changing the minds of their peers, one vote at a time? As the juror compels the others to carefully examine the evidence, the prejudices and social attitudes of each person are revealed. During the heated deliberations, hidden preconceptions are revealed, and when faced with playing the judge, each juror is forced to look inward. "12 Angry Jurors" is a powerful, timeless tale.

"I am so proud of the authentic connection and vulnerability our actors have harnessed throughout the character development process," said Daniel. "Their incredibly hard work and commitment to a very difficult script honors the profound message of this show."

Under the strong leadership of Kimberly Johnston and Moa Berglund, the production features 24 Upper School students contributing as actors, crew, and designers.

Publicity and poster design was conceived by junior Mily James. Fifteen actors bring the story to life, wearing a metaphorical costume design conceptualized by senior Seidy Pichardo. Lighting design and sound designs were created by sophomores Reese Bell and SK McQueen. The set was built and painted by stagecraft class and show crew, while crew members also managed all other technical  sourcing and developments.
