Bell, Shumate selected for Rome Orthopaedic Center Student Athlete Scholarship

Seniors Braden Bell and Sophi Shumate were selected as recipients of the Rome Orthopaedic Center Student Athlete Scholarship. They were nominated by Athletic Director Eddie Guth. 

Bell is a six-year day student from Rome. He is a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and golf. He has was given an All-Region honorable mention for boys' varsity basketball both his junior and senior years. Bell also serves as the head day prefect for Neville House. He is the son of Brent and Kristen Bell. 

"Braden has been the epitome of a scholar athlete since his first day in high school," said Guth. "He has not only played three sports for four years, but he has been a leader, a great teammate and a huge factor in his teams' successes."

Shumate is a 12-year day student from Kingston, Ga. She is a three-sport athlete playing volleyball, basketball and soccer. Shumate serves as a day leader in Thornwood House, an advancement ambassador, tiger expert and co-president of the Spanish Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. Shumate is the daughter of Kelly and Ben Harbin and Chris Shumate. 

"Sophi has done a great job both on the fields, courts and in the classroom," said Guth. "Her playing is highlighted by her hard work, unselfish attitude and positive spirit."

Bell and Shumate were recognized along with other local recipients of the scholarship at the Rome Sports Hall of Fame Banquet at Berry College.
