Senior Ventures Spotlight: Jack Cowan

My name is Jack Cowan, and I am finally a senior at Darlington! My Senior Ventures project this year is not just a venture, but a project that aims to tackle a real issue that is affecting real people in Rome, Ga., and across the country. The population of Rome that is considered food insecure consists of a good deal of Hispanic people. Despite the large number of Spanish speakers, there aren’t many volunteers that speak Spanish well enough to assist with that group of people here at Bagwell Food Pantry. My goal is to help make the food bank process easier for Spanish speakers and raise awareness in the hispanic community about the food bank. I intend to do that through creating posters with frequently asked questions that include information in both English and Spanish to put up near the data entry station. I also intend to speak at a local Hispanic church about my project and the new and simple process at the Bagwell Food Pantry. Hopefully, through making the food bank process more comfortable for Spanish speakers and raising awareness in the local Hispanic community, we can see a greater turnout of Spanish speakers at this location. I am so excited for this project and look forward to seeing what big impact it can create!

Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial. Click here to learn more.
