Senior Ventures Spotlight: Haley Oakes

For my Senior Ventures project, I will be raising awareness for the benefits of adopting older and adult dogs as well as helping the older and adult dogs at Hootie's Haven Animal Rescue get adopted. Additionally, I will research to find the answer to the question "What makes one dog more appealing than another?"

I am very passionate about this subject because my dog, Brody, was rescued by Hootie's Haven and later adopted by my family at 3 years old after being passed by multiple potential adopters. Brody is now a registered animal crisis response dog and a therapy dog with Pet Partners.

I will work with my faculty mentor, Mrs. Michael Jacobs, and my community mentor, Hootie's Haven owner Sheri Harley, throughout the year. I will be creating a social media page to share information about the dogs available. The page will be used to reach a wider audience to share the benefits of adopting older/adult dogs as well. I have already started raising money for my project from family and friends in order to waive full or partial adoption fees and maybe put together small gift baskets for the adopters.

This project will involve research about the various different parts of dog adoption, experience creating logos, curating social media posts for a target audience, and attending adoption events to meet the potential adopters.

Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial. Click here to learn more.
