Darlington Connects: Jeremy Martin (‘96)

We're excited to connect with our alumni through our new Darlington Connects series. Today we hear from Jeremy Martin (‘96) and his career in medical sales.

After spending the majority of his sales career traveling three to four days a week, Jeremy Martin took his last flight March 11 due to the pandemic. Now, like most of the country, he has transitioned to a new normal. An employee of Medline, the largest privately held medical supply manufacturer and distributor in the United States, Jeremy currently works from his home in Scarborough, Maine, over 1,000 miles from his company’s headquarters in Chicago, Ill.

A three-year boarding student from Norcross, Ga., Jeremy graduated from Darlington in 1996 and went on to attend the University of Georgia. After college, he spent some time working in Atlanta before taking a one-year trip to Maine that turned permanent.

Jeremy began his career doing equipment sales over the phone before moving into radio advertising sales and eventually learning about medical supply sales through friends. He says perseverance is something that helped him get his first job at Medline, and he has risen through the ranks from salesman, to field trainer, to district manager, and now to director of strategic business development for the eastern United States. He says his first interview with Medline didn’t go very well, but he focused on relationships and stayed connected, which eventually led to his being hired.

In his current role, Jeremy’s major set of customers is nursing homes. During the pandemic, he has had to continue to build these relationships virtually rather than in person, like he has done for so long. Fortunately, he loves healthcare and the fact that is always changing. His work allows him to guide his customers in terms of what to be prepared for and support them by getting them what they need.

Darlington helped prepare him for a successful career. “At a young age at Darlington, I learned an important life lesson, which is the ability to meet new people and adapt,” Jeremy said. “The life lessons and friends I made at Darlington will support me for the rest of my life. Darlington will always have a place in my heart.” Jeremy and his wife, Julia, have two daughters, Gwen and Anna.

Jeremy was one of the first to reach out about Darlington Connects and offer to serve as a mentor to those interested in medical sales or just to talk about the field. To connect with Jeremy, please email connect@darlingtonschool.org
