An Open Letter to My Students

Melissa Smyly | August 20, 2020 | 525 views

This is a letter to all of my students as a reflection of the first week back to school after nearly six months of being away.

To All of My Wonderful English Students,

To say that I was feeling anxious about the start of school would be an understatement. I wanted my new coursework tool to be ready, my videos to be recorded, my classroom to be sanitized, my technology to be foolproof, my thermometer to be functional, my mask to be comfortable, and my content to be relevant. I wanted to connect with former students, build relationships with new students, and advise anyone that needed help.

I pretty much had worked myself into a tizzy before anyone even walked into South Hall.

During my first actual class I was working so hard trying to connect the online students with the in person class that I was literally sweating. I just didn't want to disappoint anyone.

Thankfully all of you rose to the occasion. I have five academic classes - three sections of AP Language and two sections of English II. In every single one of my classes my students have been friendly, compassionate, engaged, cooperative, forgiving, flexible, helpful, and in good humor.

To all of you I say thank you! You are doing what you need to do to have a successful school year. I love being your teacher, look forward to the opportunities we are going to have in class, and now at the end of week one, can start to relax a little bit. This is going to be a great year!

Yours Truly,

Mrs. Smyly 😷
