Future Alumni Spotlight: Frank Manning (’20)

Julia Thomas | April 21, 2020 | 780 views

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni.

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

We hope you will enjoy getting to know these seniors better and will make a gift to honor the Class of 2020, who need our support now more than ever. To make a gift to the 2019-2020 Darlington Fund please click here

Let’s get to know Frank Manning ('20), a day student from Rome.

How have you met the challenge of distance learning?

Distance learning has definitely been something new for me. It's crazy that I don't get to see all my friends everyday, but I enjoy getting to be with my family more. I've been able to allot time for school work and also for things I love to do such as fly fishing and playing guitar which has been nice, but I hope to be back in the school routine soon!

Where are you from?

I am from Rome, Georgia

What is your favorite song?

It’s a tie between “Callin’ Baton Rouge” by Dylan Miller and “To the Table” by Zach Williams

What is your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

Hamburgers and fries

Do you have any family that attended Darlington?

Yes. My brother (Hunter) who graduated in 2016 and my sister (Sarah) who graduated in 2014.

What house are in and do you hold any leadership positions?

I am in Moser House, and I am the president of the “Y” Cabinet, secretary of the Honor Council, and a member of the Honor Council Executive Committee.

What are you involved in at Darlington?

I am on the football and lacrosse teams, in the Concert Choir and Random Notes (men's a capella group), a member of the Young Republicans, and also a long-standing member of the accounting 101 iPeriod.

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

My favorite coach is Coach Leezer. He is the men’s lacrosse coach. He was one of the first coaches that I have had in my life to invest in me as a player and young man. He made me believe that I could be a key player on the lacrosse team and my love for the game of lacrosse has increased tremendously because of him.

If you are involved in fine arts what is your favorite role and why?

Concert Choir is my favorite art because the songs that we sing are fun and I enjoy being able to sing with my friends.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

The lacrosse fields. I have had so many great memories on those fields whether they are fun practices, training my dog, practicing when half of the field is underwater (yes that did happen), and so many more.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

Mrs. Chloe Garth-Fielder. Mrs. Garth-Fielder is such a great teacher. She longs for students to establish a good work ethic and she has a heart of gold. I liked to read when I came into her AP English Language and Composition class as a junior, but after her class I loved to write. She made us write so much, but always gave us interesting topics that allowed us to write passionately about things that are important to today’s world.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I am planning to attend the University of Georgia to study biological sciences. I plan to use that degree to apply for medical and hopefully become a physician in the future.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

Peyton and Eli

The Darlington Fund raises $1million every year. If you were given $10,000 what program would you want to give it to and why?

I would want to expand the accounting 101 iPeriod into a class taught by Mr. Marshall and Mr. Willerson and use the money to create a brokerage account for Darlington that the class is able to manage throughout the year.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?

I would say the following: Thank you for the opportunity to create my own opinions.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

My favorite thing about Darlington is the relationships between students and teachers. Teachers at Darlington long to know the interest of students, how students think, and take interest in the personal lives of each student. Some of my most cherished memories at Darlington come from conversations with teachers talking about my life as well as theirs and solving the world's problems outside of class time.
