Get to Know: Brent Bell

Jennifer Collins | September 22, 2017 | 1091 views

Playful, entertaining, and absolutely informative, our Get to Know series allows the personalities of the faculty and staff who make up the Darlington Community to shine.

He is Darlington's 11th head of school and has two decades of experience in education. In addition to seeing him in his office in Wilcox Hall, he's recently been spotted in the dunk tank at Tiger Fest and cheering on the middle school football team.

How well do you know Brent Bell? Learn something new about him in this week's installment of our Get to Know series.

How long have you worked at Darlington?
This is my fourth year.

Where did you grow up?
Richmond, Va.

Tell us a little about your family:
I'm married to Andrea, and we have three boys - Charlie ('22), Jack ('24) and Brent ('26). We have a Scottish Terrier named Scottie.

Why did you choose Darlington?
I love the affection that people have for the school while also wanting Darlington to be the best place it can be. It combines a great sense of tradition and ambition. I was immediately attracted to the complexity of the Darlington Community - young students, boarding students, students from around the world.

Your seven word philosophy on education is…
Work hard, work smart, and have fun.

What makes a good teacher?
A good teacher has passion for their subject, consistency of attitude and expectations, and a desire to engage students in the learning process.

What’s your favorite podcast?
Revisionist History, Malcolm Gladwell

Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
Mrs. Dortsch was my teacher at Montessori in kindergarten and first grade. We knew that she cared about us.

I also liked Mr. Cox who taught Honors Government. His enthusiasm for the subject and ability to communicate were first class. He ran for the Virginia House of Delegates while we were students, won, and has now become Majority Leader. He was a great example for us.

What makes a good student?
A positive attutude.

E-book or hardcover?
Hardcover

Beach or mountains?
It depends on the time of year.

The last book I read for fun was…
“The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics” by Daniel James Brown

Four people I’d like to take to coffee…
My dad who is deceased, John Wooden, Abraham Lincoln, and Sonny Hereford

The best advice I ever received was…
Be the best you, you can be.

My hobby is…
Chasing kids.

Cats or dogs?
Dogs

What I like most about Darlington is…
The people.
