Darlington to present “Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR.” April 29-30

Students in grades 3-8 will take the stage this weekend in the fine arts department's production of "Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR." at the Ledbetter Commons in Thatcher Hall, April 29-30. Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

This year’s Thatcher Hall Spring Musical tells the story of Liz Miser, a first-year teacher in the midst of preparation for her very first day of school. She decides to wake up a little earlier than usual on that first day, and turns on the television. She is excited to see that “Schoolhouse Rock!” is being broadcast, immediately taking her back to her youth and the music that helped her learn different important facts and concepts in grade school.

Is it a hallucination in the early morning hours or some altered form of reality that brings the classic songs and characters to life, as they take over her living room?

“The heart of the musical is that we should have fun while we learn,” said Kimberly Human, ELA-8 music teacher. “One of the things that sparked my interest in the show was that the music was already being used in some of our students’ science, language arts, social studies and math classes. It is a great way to connect academics to the fine arts, and the students have learned a lot just by their participation.”

Those in attendance next weekend will recognize many of the songs, including “Conjunction Junction,” “The Preamble,” “Three is a Magic Number,” “Interplanet Janet,” and “Do the Circulation.”

Students have been rehearsing twice each week since the winter break for four hours per week, and have also been called on to use time outside of practice to prepare for their roles.

“With these kids being so busy with athletics and other responsibilities they’re already balancing on top of the spring musical, it is great to be able to see their commitment level,” added Human. "Everyone in ELA-8 is excited about this show."

Due to the limited seating available, all patrons are asked to reserve seats for this event in advance. Booster members, parents, students, and faculty members may order one free general admission ticket to the show. Additional tickets for the musical are $7 each. Click here to reserve seats.
