Course offerings in the Media Arts program will include the following:

The Newsroom I/II/III
Students will create multimedia news, feature, entertainment and sports stories for the Darlingtonian and for TheDarNews social media platforms. This is an active publishing class run like a newsroom. Editors will lead the class in news pitch sessions, where weekly plans for creating fresh and relevant content expressing the news and opinions of the student body will be determined. This class will also build a new video studio.

Photo Graphics
Students will study cameras, camera technique, composition, critique, exhibition, and survey historical and contemporary photographers. Students will use Adobe Photoshop to scan, print, digitally retouch, enhance, and alter photographs, and create digital composites to express new ideas. Students will use Adobe Illustrator to design graphics and layouts, explore typography, and create digital illustrations. Project assignments, demonstrations, critiques and lectures will provide in-depth experiences in the aesthetic, cultural and historic dimensions of the mediums. Many hours photographing outside of school time are required. Students will develop a personal body of work from which they will design a professional portfolio of mounted and matted prints together with an online gallery. They will also participate in a cross-cultural exchange sharing their work.

These two new courses are in addition to Advanced Media: Yearbook. The Newsroom and Yearbook can be taken multiple times and all classes are open to students grade 9-11. Students in all three classes will be invited to compete at national journalism competitions next year.
