Regional youth orchestra concert returns Feb. 15

Students from Darlington and other area schools perform at the sixth annual Northwest Georgia Youth Orchestra concert in 2013.

The public is invited to the Northwest Georgia Youth Orchestra’s seventh annual concert on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Thatcher Hall on the Darlington School campus. The casual event is free to attend and will be held indoors in the Ledbetter Commons.

Over 30 students will participate in the performance, comprised primarily of students from Darlington and Georgia Cumberland Academy, as well as Rome High School, Woodland High School, and local home-school groups.

Highlights of the concert include performances by student musicians of “St. Paul’s Suite” by English-born Gustav Holst (1874-1934), and an early symphony by Bohemian-born Johann Stamitz (1717-57).

“The second movement of Stamitz’s symphony is just gorgeous,” said Will Camp, Darlington’s director of instrumental music. “It exudes a feeling of tragic love, but a bit more melancholy.”

Students have been practicing for the concert since the beginning of the second semester.

“It's important for people to see where all symphonies and orchestras get their start, and to see the young kids play,” said Camp, who is also the director of the Darlington Instrumental Music Conservatory. “This concert always draws a diverse crowd, including area musicians.”
