Randy Smith, sixth- and seventh-grade science teacher, has been named chairman of the ELA-8 Director Search Committee. As such, he will lead the national search to find a replacement for Dr. James Hutchins, who has accepted a new position as president/headmaster at The Donoho School.

"I am honored to be given the opportunity to head the ELA-8 Director Search Committee," Smith said. "I value the education that my children have received at Darlington and desire to see our next director continue to expand the positive presence, influence and impact of the school in the Rome and Northwest Georgia community."

Smith has taught science at Darlington since 2000 and also coaches Middle School wrestling, football and soccer. With over 20 years of experience in the classroom, he holds a B.S.Ed. in Math and Science from Georgia Southern University as well as an M.Ed. and an Ed.S., both in Math and Science, from Georgia State University. A member of NSTA, Smith is a recipient of Darlington's Brown Faculty Award and a co-recipient of the 2012 Carla and Leonard Wood Faculty Professional Development Endowment Award. He was also selected to present at the 2013 iSummit Technology Conference and 2013 Annual GISA Conferences, encouraging the integration of technology in the classroom.

As a coach, Smith led the girls' Middle School soccer team to three consecutive undefeated seasons and the
inaugural FCAA Championship in 2010. He also coached the boys' Middle School soccer team to its first FCAA Championship title in 2012. Additionally, he has promoted Darlington's wrestling program through the Tiger Brawl for the last seven years and launched the Darlington Takedown Classic in 2013. He and his wife, Leigh Ann, have three children, Rand ('18), Lila ('20) and Bradley ('23).

"The Search Committee is excited about the process, and we look forward to working together to identify the best candidate for this critical position," Smith said. "We are committed to hearing from our community and to identifying the best candidate to lead our ELA-8 division. Any internal candidates are asked to contact me to express their intentions."

Joining Smith on the ELA-8 Director Search Committee are Tommy Atha, assistant athletic director and ELA-8 P.E. teacher; Alice Clements, third-grade teacher; Julie Fine, ELA-8 English teacher; Laura Hicks, ELA-8 Teaching and Learning Center coordinator; Kevin Ivester, fourth-grade teacher; Beth Pollard, chief financial officer; David Powell, academic dean; and Melja Watkins, second-grade teacher.

"All of these committee members, who collectively represent 103 years of experience at Darlington, are eager to join together in this important work," Powell said. "We will meet for the first time the week after Christmas, and further communication will follow soon after that. Darlington is fortunate to have such committed educators willing to help shape our school’s future."
