Darlington is pleased to announce that there are 49 merit scholars for the 2012-13 school year. Based on academic achievements, merit scholarships are divided into specific named awards.
Established in memory of Wesley Coleman Jr. (’42) by his family, the Wesley N. Coleman Memorial Scholarship was awarded to senior Sam Mathis of Rome.
Established by the C.D. Spangler Foundation and the Cornwell family, the Cornwell Scholarship was awarded to senior Madeline Tackeberry of Matthews, N.C.; junior Emma Parham of Asheville, N.C.; and sophomore Eli Alewel of Murphy, N.C.
Established in memory of educator George Dorsey by friends and former students, the George Andrew Dorsey Scholarship was awarded to fifth-grader Kobe Nadu of Summerville, Ga.
Established by the Drummond family in appreciation for the role that Darlington continues to play in the life of Jere Drummond (’57), the Drummond Leadership Scholarship Fund was awarded to senior Mary Grace Denson of Rome; junior Grigsby Gordy of Rockmart, Ga.; and freshmen Emily and Will Robertson of Kennesaw, Ga.
Established by the Grizzard family in honor of Elson Floyd (’74), Darlington’s first African-American graduate, the Elson S. Floyd Scholarship was awarded to senior Brandon Knott of Rome; juniors Jeremiah McClure of Rome and Kataeya Wooten of Cartersville, Ga.; sophomore Jazlyn Green of Rome; seventh-grader Jamila Wood of Powder Springs, Ga.; and sixth-grader J.D. Hull of Rome.
Established in memory of John Fitten Glenn III (’83) by family and friends, the John Glenn Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Destiny Sewell of Cedartown, Ga.; sophomore Niambh O’Neill of Rome; and freshmen Zoe and Pressley Smith of Kingston, Ga.
The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund was awarded to juniors Carlos Carrillo of Lindale, Ga., and Isabela Martignon of Calhoun, Ga.; sophomore Alexandra Porto of Rome; and freshman Amber Rodriguez of Mableton, Ga.
The Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship, established by the Grizzard family, was awarded to sophomore Kyle Love of Cedartown, Ga.; sixth-grader Morgan Ivester of Rome; and second-grader Kennedy Rose Garrett of Rockmart, Ga.
Established by the Robert P. Holding Foundation Inc., the Robert P. Holding Scholarship was awarded to senior Devin Alewel of Murphy, N.C.
Established through the Second Century Campaign, the Darlington Honor Scholarship was awarded to freshmen Adam Tarrant of Rome and Adrianna Young of Meridianville, Ala.
Established in memory of Amanda Hubbard de Costerd (’78) by her parents, the Hubbard de Costerd Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Kinslee Clevenger of Rome; freshmen Emma Chambers of Mt. Berry, Ga., Dylan Paracka of Rome, and Sarah-Jane Prusakowski of Rome; and eighth-grader Anna Grace Turrentine of Rome.
Established by Rocky Huffman (’67) in honor of his father, the Huffman Scholarship was awarded to senior Remy Jennings of Rome; junior Hannah Mae Deems of Taylorsville, Ga.; and freshman Noah Brown of Cedartown, Ga.
The James Ross McCain Scholarship was awarded to junior Conner Hallett of Lawrenceville, Ga.
Established by the William S. “Billy” Morris III (’52) family, the Morris Scholarship was awarded to senior Grace Anne Greene of McDonough, Ga., and sophomores Charlotte Boyd of St. Simons Island, Ga., Jenna Crutcher of Stevensville, Mich., Rachel Gideon of Nashville, Tenn., and Marlee Massengill of Bainbridge, Ga.
Established by the late Jean Morrison in memory of her grandson, Jason Morrison, the Jason Morrison Memorial Scholarship was awarded to senior Miles Bearden of Cartersville, Ga.; sophomores Rachel Gideon of Nashville, Tenn., and Niambh O’Neill of Rome.
Established through the Second Century Campaign by alumnae of Thornwood School, the all-girls preparatory school that merged with Darlington in 1973, the Thornwood Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Hannah Harper of Rome.
Established by Frank C. Wilson (’46), the Frank and Ann Wilson Merit Scholarship was awarded to freshman Emma Chambers of Mt. Berry, Ga.
Established by Alice Freida Yurke (’80) in memory of her mother and grandmother, the Yurke Family Fund was awarded to junior Hannah Mae Deems of Taylorsville, Ga.
