Rachel Harrison has been hired to teach first grade at Darlington this fall.

“Rachel is going to be a wonderful addition to our Lower School team,” said James Hutchins, who will serve as director of Darlington’s PK-8 program in the coming year. “Her energy and enthusiasm for teaching and learning is contagious, and I am confident that our first-grade students and families will adore her.”

The wife of Upper School math teacher and head baseball coach Kent Harrison (’01), Rachel is no stranger to Darlington. She has also directed Cheerleading Camp for the past couple of years. She will replace Rebekah Montgomery (’78), who recently announced her plans to stay at home and spend more time with her family.

“I fell in love with Darlington when I met my husband 10 years ago,” Rachel said. “Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet and develop close friendships with many of the students and families. Because of this, I knew that Darlington was the place I wanted to be. I am thrilled to work alongside an incredible staff and phenomenal administrators.”

She holds a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and an M.Ed. from the University of West Georgia. She has taught first grade at Midway Primary School for the past four years and also teaches gymnastics and tumbling at Hot Shots.

“The thing I love most about early childhood education is the kids,” Rachel said. “I love watching how excited they get when they finally understand a new concept or idea. I get excited seeing them work together and constructing their own knowledge in the classroom. I also love the collaboration between the teachers. I've known since the third grade that I was supposed to be a teacher. My third-grade teacher was my inspiration. She instilled in me a love for learning. Most importantly, she showed me through her teaching that learning can be exciting!”

She added that she truly looks forward to serving the students and the Darlington Community.

“I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs to feel like they are in an environment that fosters a lifelong love of learning,” she said. “I want every student who leaves my classroom to not only have grown academically, but in integrity and confidence.”
