Sam Moss ('63), dean of college guidance at Darlington School, has been named to the Board of Directors of the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS), announced ACCIS Executive Director Eric Monheim of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., recently.

“The essential mission of ACCIS is to support the work of college counselors in independent schools by affirming their unique leadership role in educational communities where they serve young people,” Moss said. “Among the organization’s prime objectives are to provide training and resources for independent school college counselors through summer institutes and other professional development programs and to educate internal and external institutional leaders about the particular challenges and opportunities inherent in the educational continuum, including the college admissions process.”

In order for a school to be a member of ACCIS, the institution must be a member of both the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the National Association for Admission Counseling (NACAC).

The ACCIS Board of Directors Search Committee was chaired by former Emory University President Bill Chase, with whom Moss will serve on the Board, along with his newly elected counterparts from the Harvard-Westlake School in California, Colorado Academy in Denver, Pace Academy in Atlanta, Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, and Princeton University faculty member and author Tom Espenshade.

“I congratulate and thank Sam Moss for his election to the ACCIS Board,” said fellow Board member Chris Teare of Antilles School, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. “I am thrilled that he will be helping guide our young organization forward. His ratification of what has been put together and his vision for its future will be extremely valuable.”

Moss and Marsha Hunt, director of college counseling at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, will lead a workshop titled “The Utility of Networking” at the ACCIS Summer Institute at Occidental College in Pasadena, Calif., on June 19.

Moss has served previously on the Board of Directors of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC); as president of the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC), now serving as adviser to the Board; on the National Merit Scholarship Selection Committee; as a member of The College Board’s Southern Regional Council; as chairman of the Guidance and Admissions Assembly of The College Board; and on the Admissions Advisory Boards of the University of Georgia, Auburn University, Oglethorpe University and the University of Miami.

In addition, he serves locally on the Board of Directors of the South Rome Redevelopment Agency (SRRA), South Rome Redevelopment Corporation (SRRC) and the Rome Symphony Orchestra.

Moss holds a B.A. from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., and an M.A. from Jacksonville University in Florida.
