Darlington to host 2nd Annual Light the Lake

March 10, 2011 | 466 views

The Darlington Community will walk thousands of laps around Silver Lake on April 1 during Light the Lake, the school’s annual Relay for Life-inspired fundraiser. Proceeds raised by this event will support Cancer Navigators, a local organization that provides resources to all who are touched by the life-changing process of dealing with cancer.

“Last year’s event raised $7,600 and we hope to do even better this year,” said Reba Barnes, director of servant leadership. “I believe that this student-driven event is so successful because so many members of our community have been personally touched by cancer. This is a wonderful opportunity to honor and support them. I hope all of our families PK-12 as well as area alumni and friends will come out and participate in this event.”

The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Throughout the entire evening, students, faculty, parents and friends will walk laps around the lake. After dinner, candles will be released onto the lake, which will be lined with hundreds of luminaries in honor and memory of friends and family. A Walk of Honor will follow at 8 p.m.

T-shirts are the sole fundraiser for Light the Lake, and they may be purchased as any of the three division offices for $15 before Friday, March 18.

“Raising money is so important for our community, but raising awareness among young people is where it begins,” said Kandi Riddle, a Board member for Cancer Navigators. “I am a cancer patient myself and as I walked around the lake last year, I saw so many luminaries with my name on them. It meant more to me than those students will ever know.”
