Award-winning concert choir performs at Darlington

March 26, 2010 | 349 views

Capella, the award-winning concert choir of Calvin College (Mich.), performed at Darlington School’s Morris Chapel on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Joel Navarro led the 42-voice choir in a program that included works from five continents, ranging from newer music from Finland and the Philippines to arrangements of the familiar hymns “Give Me Jesus” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” Other highlights included the Swahili chorus “Sifuni Mungu” and Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on This Shining Night.” Darlington School’s Concert Choir also performed at this event under the direction of 2005 Calvin College alumna Erin Westmaas, Darlington’s choral director.

Navarro recently led Capella in its first international vocal competition, the prestigious Florilège Vocal de Tours, held in France. The youngest of 21 choirs competing in the adult division, Capella impressed the judges and the audiences, earning a pair of third-place medals in the Mixed Choirs category and the Free Program category.

In addition to international travels, Capella tours annually within North America. This performance at Darlington concluded the group’s Spring 2010 Tour. Recent tour highlights included concerts at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago and at the spectacular Milwaukee Art Museum.
