English teacher Mitchell Maddox will be a presenter at the 54th Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society March 1-5 in Chicago. The conference theme is "Reimaging Education."

"In order to cultivate informed citizenship and enable students in the global workplace, traditional models of literacy education must accommodate an up-to-the-minute experience of the world, including but not limited to proficient analysis and interpretation of input from information communication technologies (ICTs), film and television, and even entertainment technologies (video games) at all levels of the pedagogy," Maddox said. "The most effective methodologies for these practices require (a) the instructor’s willingness to engage with various social and networking media as equal to more traditional methods of communicating information (written text); and (b) a comprehensive effort in the classroom to reduce the perceived distance between the students’ technologically enhanced experience of the world and the academic 'world' of the classroom."

Maddox's presentation will demonstrate methods of classroom instruction that promote this new conception of literacy education.

Maddox has taught English at Darlington since 2007. He has his teacher certification and holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He also works as a freelance writer.

During the conference, CIES participants will explore the role of education in fostering knowledge and values and how these have contributed to the current economic, social and political global environment. Presenters will examine the interaction of education with governance at a large and regional scale and its effects at the micro levels on schools, classrooms, teachers and pupils.
