Rob Hall

Rob Hall will take on a more expansive role as school-wide reading specialist effective June 2009, announced incoming academic dean David Powell during a faculty meeting this morning.

“Literacy is not confined to the language classes; reading is the interface between thought and language, and learning to read well is a lifelong activity,” Powell said. “Rob Hall will help us to integrate effective reading into all areas of study at all levels of our school as we, both students and teachers, become more effective thinkers and problem solvers.”

In his new role, Hall will be responsible for developing, implementing, leading and evaluating Darlington’s comprehensive, school-wide literacy program. He will serve as a vital resource person for faculty members by providing research-based strategies and plans as well as professional development opportunities that focus on literacy. He has been charged with organizing division-specific literacy committees; observing and provide feedback to classroom teachers; and implementing and analyzing formal literacy assessments PK-12. Hall will also team with the Learning Center staff to develop plans for appropriate literacy interventions for identified individuals.

“Rob’s expertise will, without question, enhance Darlington’s mission both individually at each division and collectively as a PK-12 school community,” said Libbie Zimmer, director of the Learning Center. “In his short time at Darlington, he has worked with our Lower School students, teachers and parents. By broadening his audience to include the Middle and Upper School divisions, his impact will be even more significant. Rob has great vision for a comprehensive literacy program that will challenge our students and equip them with quality reading and writing skills that prepare them for the ever-changing demands of the 21st Century.”

Hall has been a member of Darlington’s faculty since August 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Jacksonville State University, a Master of Science in Education from Berry College and Reading Endorsement Trainer Certification. He is also working on a Doctor of Philosophy from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minn.
