Michael Schecter (front row, center) signs to play tennis at Wofford College next year. Joining him are (front row, from left) grandmother Marcella Hubbard, mother Gina, father Jay, sister Stephanie, (back row, from left) Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss ('63), Director of Upper School Dr. Mark Carleton, tennis coach Freddie Rodriguez and Athletic Director Jerry Sharp.
Michael Schecter’s senior year at Darlington isn’t even half over, but the standout tennis player has already locked in his college destination. Schecter, a standout on the Tigers’ varsity team and on the junior tennis circuit, signed a tennis and academic scholarship on Thursday with Wofford College.

Schecter has a long list of accomplishments through his first three years of high school. He has played No. 1 singles for the Darlington boys’ team during his first three seasons, and he was the team captain last spring as a junior.

He helped lead the Tigers to three straight Region 6-AA titles and as a freshman, he helped Darlington reach the state finals.

Schecter is currently ranked No. 2 in the United States Tennis Association ratings for the Boys’ 18s division in Georgia, and he is ranked 50th by the USTA in the nine-state Southern Section for Boys’ 18s.

He has won several USTA state championships, including the 2006 Georgia Junior Clay Court Open, the 2006 Georgia-Florida Open, the 2006 Georgia Junior Challenger, and the Georgia Junior Clay Court Open in both 2003 and 2005.

Schecter has also earned several USTA sportsmanship awards, including taking home this honor at the 2006 Georgia Junior Challenger, the 2005 Georgia Junior Clay Court Open and the 2003 National Zonals.

Schecter is also a two-time member of the USTA Zonals “Team Southern” squad.

He joins a Wofford team that is a member of the Southern Conference. The Terriers finished last season 10-11 and fell in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament to Chattanooga.

Schecter is the son of Dr. Jay and Gina Schecter of Rome, Ga.
