Four Darlington students were named to the Rome News-Tribune's 2005 All-Area Football Team this month. The offensive line-up includes seniors Greg Phillips and Luke Hyder, while the defensive line-up includes senior Ryan McMahon and junior Corey Roper.
Phillips is the son of Greg and Amy Phillips of Rome, Ga. This year, he managed the Tigers' offense and did whatever was needed to keep drives going, whether it was get the ball to his running backs, throw the ball downfield or even tuck it and run himself. He helped lead the School to the second round of the state playoffs and finished the year 84-for-155 for 1,005 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Hyder is the son of Tony and Michille Hyder of Cave Spring, Ga. This season, he was a big-time player for the Tigers on both sides of the ball. He had 209 carries for 1,407 yards and 19 touchdowns while serving as the School's main running back. On defense, he finished with 126 tackles, 11 tackes for loss, nine sacks.
McMahon is the son of Donnie and Jackie McMahon of Pensacola, Fla. A Florida State signee, he posted 69 tackles, 14 for loss, four sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick, and two safeties. He was also an anchor on the offensive line.
Roper is the son of Levi and Frankie Roper of Rome, Ga. He led the School's secondary with 31 tackles, seven pass break ups and six picks. He was also the Tigers' go-to receiver this season and one of the team's most respected leaders.
