With a recent victory at the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Mathematics Tournament, the Darlington math team has proved that they can calculate numbers, as well as success. The five-year-old team has won the AA division of the contest three times in the last four years.
“I am so proud of our boys. They are certainly talented young mathematicians,” said Pat Waddell, math team adviser and pre-calculus teacher. “This is quite an honor for our young men and for the School.”
According to Waddell, there are about 40 math competitions held across the state during the year, and the team attends as many as possible. This year, they qualified for the state tournament in each contest that was visited. Only a few of the best performing teams are invited to attend the annual state tournament, which hosted 30 high school teams this year.
Math team members include seniors Brian Eberhard and David Grizzard from Rome, Ga.; senior Alan Luo from Taiwan; and junior Kyu Seo Kim from Korea. Eberhard and Grizzard are repeat state winners, who were both part of the 2003-2004 Division AA winning team.
After this year’s state tournament, Luo was invited to be one of Georgia’s representatives in the national math contest, but will not be able to attend due to a previously scheduled trip to Europe.
All four team members and classmates Pinn Charysiri, Leslie Goldberg, Kelly Hoyt, Dennis Kim and Wil Tucker scored a perfect 800 on the math section of the SAT, leading Waddell to conclude that “it has been a tremendous year for mathematics at Darlington.”
