Boarding Students After School

All boarding students must see an adult when they sign-out and return to campus. Students are expected to sign-out from the Student Center or with their Head of House. All sign-outs require the permission of the Heads of House or the faculty member on duty. It is understood that in signing in and out, the student is making an honor statement. School authorities must know where the student goes when he or she checks out. Any change in plans must be reported to the Head of House or duty teacher prior to the student deviating from his or her original destination. Students who leave campus without the proper permission will have a meeting with the Student Life Office and should expect to appear before the Discipline Committee and/or Honor Council.

Boarding students may not leave campus during the academic week to take trips outside of the 25-mile radius unless they are traveling with a family member. The academic week is considered Sunday night through Friday night.

Boarding students may use taxis during the weekend, Friday at 6 pm until Sunday curfew. Taxi travel is limited to travel within the 25-mile radius of Darlington only. Appropriate parental permission must be granted and on file with the Student Life Office. Students are required to travel in a minimum of pairs. Solo taxi trips are not permitted.

The Dean of Student Life and Dean of Residential Life have the final say in all matters pertaining to campus leaves.

Afternoon Leave

All students must check in and out of the Student Center if leaving or returning to campus between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm. After 6:30 pm, students must check in with the duty person in their house.
Seniors who are in good standing may take afternoon leave with proper approval throughout the week after school.
Juniors are permitted to take afternoon leave twice a week. Sophomores and freshmen are permitted to take afternoon leave once a week.

Night Leave
During the week, night leave may be granted by the Head of House for special outings.

Night Leave is a privilege afforded to seniors in good standing. Factors determining the approval of any leaves include but are not limited to room inspection, tardiness, academic standing, and general conduct.

Seniors in good standing may request one night leave per week through their Head of House.

All leaves are subject to the judgment of the Head of House and the Student Life team.

Seniors who take night leave are required to return to campus no later than 9:30 p.m.

Students may not take trips outside of the 25-mile radius.

Weekend Leave
Weekend Sign-out/Sign-in – Students in good standing may sign out with the faculty member on duty or Head of House after school on Fridays after school and on Saturdays and Sundays. Students must be specific about their destination and time of departure, and must immediately check in when they arrive back on campus. All leaves must be approved by the faculty member on duty. Weekend curfews are as follows: underclassmen, 11 p.m.; seniors, 11:30 p.m.

Extended Leaves
Day Leave – Students in good standing may have the privilege of day leave on Saturday from 10 a.m. until their curfew or Sunday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Missing checks and travel outside the 25-mile radius is appropriate with proper and timely permissions.

Weekend Leave – Students in good standing may have the privilege of weekend leave on any open weekend. Each resident student is entitled to six weekend leaves per semester, excluding holiday weekends, school trips, and college visits.

Requests for Day and Weekend Leaves must be submitted in writing by 10 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the leave.

Parental confirmation must be received by Thursday at 10 pm (Send parental confirmation to the student’s Head of House by approving the leave request, email or phone to the appropriate Head of House).

The leave must be approved by the Head of House.

Weekend leaves may begin on Friday after the student's last commitment, and students must return and check in by 6 p.m. on Sunday, unless special permission is granted by the Head of House. No student, except in an emergency, will be permitted to take a day or weekend leave that conflicts with a scheduled school activity or with their obligations and responsibilities to the school, including work detail or Saturday School.

*All leaves are subject to being revoked or approved by the Head of House or the Student Life Office when parental or host contacts cannot be satisfactorily contacted.
