This experienced educator works within and leads the Pre-K to 12 Library Services program and team to foster multi-disciplinary collections, spaces, and programs that support active student learning and teaching excellence. As an academic leader for the school, this person visibly and actively fosters an inclusive environment for all learners and educators in support of the mission and values of the school, with the primary goal of crafting a superior student academic experience around Darlington’s Cycle of Learning. The Director works to build awareness and engagement among all members of the school community regarding existing and new library resources and program offerings, and collaborates with groups to maximize use of those resources. This position will start in August for the 2022-2023 academic year. 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field along with substantive related experience and proven leadership ability.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with people in one-on-one and group situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills enabling the position to foster a sense of collaboration and unity among teachers, parents, and students.
  • History of continued professional growth and the ability and desire to help others do the same.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Can use experience, judgment, creativity, and independence to plan and accomplish goals

Responsibilities

  • Hires and supervises library personnel at all grade levels, assists in establishing and supporting professional goals, and evaluates their progress in meeting those goals.
  • Establishes and communicates a philosophy and vision for the library program, translates institutional needs into library goals and objectives, and oversees growth of the program through accomplishment of strategic tasks. 
  • Provides leadership in the planning, management, and evaluation of school library programs.
  • Establishes mechanisms to collect data regarding the implementation of services and evaluates the effectiveness of the library in meeting its goals.
  • Develops flexible library policies around the use of collections and spaces and implementation of programs that ensure equitable access and service to all members of the school community.
  • Works with department heads to ensure the integration of information skills throughout the school's curriculum and instructional program.
  • Actively participates in appropriate leadership meetings and committees.
  • Facilitates and delivers professional development for faculty based on identified needs.
  • Identifies summer support resources and develops summer programs in support of library goals, including summer reading.
  • Creates and manages the department budget.
  • Keeps informed of the latest changes in the industry and research, and evaluates and recommends new and updated research for the improvement of academic and administrative areas of the School.
  • Attends conferences, visits schools, and participates in professional organizations in order to maintain a network of professional resources to benefit the department and school.
  • Instructs students and teachers on a formal and informal basis in skills related to reading, research, production of materials, and the use of information and instructional technologies.
  • Monitors rights and responsibilities of users relating to the generation and flow of information and ideas (e.g., copyright, confidentiality/privacy, intellectual freedom).
