Senior Walker Sirmans has been named Noon Optimist Student of the Month for September.

"Walker Sirmans impresses me with his affable nature, his dedication to his family, and his deep commitment to living a life in service to others," said Dean of College Guidance Ivy Brewer, Sirmans' adviser. "Whether as an engaged classmate, a faithful teammate, a devoted brother, or an ESP mentor, Walker can be found in the practice of making others' lives better."

A day student who has been enrolled at Darlington since pre-K, Sirmans has taken 11 Honors and AP courses during his high school career. He is a member of National Honor Society and is a four-year member of the golf team.

"Walker is a thoughtful teammate and a hard-working athlete that strives to make himself better," said Jared Willerson, head golf coach. "He has been a valued member of the golf team while at Darlington. I'm very proud for him to receive this honor."

Outside of school, Sirmans volunteers with Extra Special People Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create transformative experiences for people with disabilities and their families, changing communities for the better. His younger sister, Ivey, is deaf-blind, and he enjoys helping her when she participates in ESP events and other community events such as the Special Olympics. The son of Gwen and Matt Sirmans of Rome, Walker will be honored at an Optimist Club luncheon on Sept. 19.
