Julia Thomas | May 6, 2020 | 456 views

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni.

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

We hope you will enjoy getting to know these seniors better and will make a gift to honor the Class of 2020, who need our support now more than ever. To make a gift to the 2019-2020 Darlington Fund please click here

Let’s get to know Makiya Mayes (’20), a day student from Cartersville, Georgia.

How have you met the challenge of distance learning?

It has not been difficult. The teachers are making it easy to contact them if you need help. And especially since there is no schedule, it is motivating to actually do the school work.

What’s your favorite song?

“Sunflower Vol.6” by Harry Styles

What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

Chicken tenders and fries

What house are you in?

I am a leader in Thornwood

What are you involved in at Darlington (clubs, etc.)?

Varsity Volleyball for 4 years. Costume manager in "Shrek The Musical".

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

Volleyball. My favorite coach is EJ Hunt. He does not work at Darlington but he is an assistant coach and he has always been there for us and he cares about us and we can talk to him about anything. He's also very funny.

How have you been involved in fine arts?

This year I was able to help backstage in the musical for costumes and makeup. I was costume manager and it was an experience I've never been a part of and everyone was so sweet and welcoming. I encourage everyone to try it out.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

The dorms. Because I love staying with my friends and hearing about their cultures and how they live and it's always a party in twood and being around all the girls is such a good feeling.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

My favorite teacher is Mr. Hudson because he is hilarious. His class is always fun and there is never a dull moment.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I'm going to college at Georgia Southern University and I want to be a speech pathologist.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

Drake and Josh

If you were given $10,000 to donate where would you donate to and why?

The sports program. Other than football because I feel like the other sports do not get enough recognition and enough money for uniforms, bags, etc.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year sure you have a great experience - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?

Thank you for giving to Darlington and helping us succeed.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

My favorite thing about Darlington would be the people. Everyone is so loving and welcoming and fun. I have been so thankful to have had the opportunity to have gone to such a great school for 14 years. Meeting people from around the world has been so life changing and I'm so blessed to have made such memorable relationships with everyone.
