Every once in awhile I will find a book that just stands above the rest and honestly, just makes me happy. Back in August as I was looking for a good picture book to read to my younger students, I stumbled across the book, "Minerva Louise at School." I had never heard of Minerva Louise and am so thrilled to have discovered her books!
Minerva Louise is a delightfully cheerful chicken with an intense sense of curiosity. You might even call her simple-minded, but only in a positive way of course. Minerva Louise loves exploring and sees the world through her limited perspective of being a chicken on a farm.
Maybe my draw to this little hen can be attributed to my childhood growing up visiting my grandparents' farm in rural Indiana. Maybe it is the fact that Minerva Louise takes time to smell the roses and finds pleasures in the simple things in life. Whatever the connection, I just find the "Minerva Louise" books to be a breath of fresh air, charming, and just plain silly fun.
Since that first day I discovered Minerva Louise, I have continued to locate and read more of her books, and have never been disappointed. In fact, I can always count on a good chuckle for myself and the children. They love her silly antics and laugh at her interpretations of people and objects not familiar to her.
If you are looking for fun stories with an amusing main character and bold, colorful illustrations, how about you give Miss Minerva Louise a try?
