Scott Lohmeyer will join the Darlington Community this fall to teach math in grades 6-7 and coach middle school wrestling. He received a B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Rhode Island and an M.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport. He also holds Connecticut Teacher's Certification for grades K-6.

“Learning is serious fun. You can have a lot of fun, but it still has to be taken seriously,” said Lohmeyer. “That has always been my approach.”

Originally from Connecticut, he previously taught for three years in grades 5-6 at Cayman International School in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. There he advised the Middle School Student Leadership Team, helping to coordinate assemblies, school dances and other events. He also served as director of the high school rock band and coordinated the "Teacher Creatures" faculty rock band.

“Working at an international school has allowed me to find ways to connect with students on a more universal level, to teach and impart a mindset that we are living in the digital age in a global community,” said Lohmeyer. “Making friends from around the world has helped me find underlying connections between so many different cultures.”

Before working in the Caribbean, he served as a long-term substitute teacher in fifth grade at Glenville Elementary School in Greenwich, Ct., where he taught math, reading, writing, social studies and science. Lohmeyer has also worked as a cabin counselor and facilitated the ropes course at Camp Agawam in Maine, and as a field teacher with Nature’s Classroom in Mentone, Ala.

“In my interview with Darlington, one thing I really emphasized was that I needed a school with a strong community,” he said. “The camaraderie of the faculty and staff was something that really drew me to the school and gave me a good feeling.”

In his free time, Lohmeyer plays the piano and ukulele, and is learning to play the guitar. He enjoys running, softball, trivia, traveling and exploring live entertainment.

“I wanted to get back down into this area to the southern mentality and hospitality,” he added. “Rome is a pretty active place to be, and it is so close to everything.”

Lohmeyer will reside on the Darlington campus in the McCain House.
