Head of School Brent Bell announced today that longtime physical education teacher and coach Tommy Atha will take on an additional role as associate athletic director, effective July 1.

"I am grateful for Tommy's continued commitment to Darlington and know that he will do a great job in this role," Bell said. "Tommy's experience and love of Darlington will make him a great partner with new Athletic Director Eddie Guth."

Atha has taught and coached at Darlington since 1993 and currently serves as head football coach and assistant girls' basketball coach. He holds a B.S. from Presbyterian College.

"I am very excited to be taking on this additional role," Atha said. "It is a great opportunity for me to support all of the outstanding coaches we have here at Darlington as they work to build successful teams and meaningful experiences for our student-athletes."

Atha has led the Tigers football team to the state playoffs 18 times and coached them to three consecutive region championships from 2009-2011. During his tenure, he has also served as assistant athletic director for ELA-8; JV and middle school girls' basketball coach; track coach; and civics, world geography and American history teacher.

"I look forward to assisting Eddie Guth as he implements his vision for the Darlington athletic program," Atha said. "I am also excited about getting more involved in the daily life at the Upper School while maintaining the relationships I have built in the ELA-8 program. It's a very exciting time to be a Tiger!"

He and his wife, Cathe, are the parents of Maggie Beth (‘14), Anna Claire (‘17), Tommy (‘19) and Katherine (‘25).
