Eighth-grader Matias Selle was recognized as Darlington's Optimist Club Student of the Semester on May 7.
"Watching [Matias] grow from a wild 6th grader into a mature, well-rounded, inquisitive young man who’s always willing to try new things, give 100% effort, and show up for others—no matter what—is exactly why he stands out," said math teacher Chris Eberhart, who introduced Selle at the awards presentation. "During the school day, Matias is constantly pushing himself to improve in every subject. He’s never afraid of putting in the extra work. Outside the classroom, he’s just as impressive. This past year alone, Matias played football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball. And the amazing part? He excelled at all of them. As an athlete, he never gives up. But even more importantly, as a friend—he never gives up on anyone. He is truly the kind of friend we all wish we had."
At Darlington, Selle is involved in football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball.

Good evening, everyone.
I’m incredibly honored to be standing here today as the Student of the Semester at Darlington Middle School. This truly means a lot to me.
For those who know me, you know I love sports. Athletics have always been a huge part of my life and my success. Wherever there’s a field, a ball, and a challenge, I’m ready. But what people don’t always see is the work from the early mornings, the sore muscles, the losses that hit hard, and the moments when I wondered if I had what it takes. There were times when balancing academics, athletics, and everything else felt like it was too much. But every setback has made me into someone stronger and more determined.
Through all of it, I’ve learned that success isn't just about talent—it's about showing up every single day with heart, grit, and a willingness to grow. I’ve worked hard in the classroom, on the field, and within myself. Looking ahead, my dream is to play football at the professional level. I know the road won’t be easy, but I’m committed to chasing that goal with everything I’ve got because I believe that with hard work and the right support, it’s possible.
And speaking of support, I want to take a moment to thank the two people who have always been there for me. Siri and JP Selle, could you please stand? You’ve given me more than I can ever put into words. From long drives to practices to being my biggest fans, your love and belief in me has made all the difference. Thank you for everything.
To my teachers, coaches, and friends here at Darlington, thank you for pushing me, guiding me, and helping me grow. I’m proud to be a part of the Darlington community, and I’m even more motivated to keep moving forward.
Thank you.
