Assistant Director of Pre-K to 8

As an academic leader for the school, this person helps foster a dynamic environment of teaching professionals who are continuously growing and collaborating to support the mission and values of the school with the primary goal of crafting a superior student academic experience around Darlington’s Cycle of Learning. This position reports to the Director of Pre-K to 8 and works collaboratively within the school's Academic Leadership Team.

This person leads through relationships, cultivates teamwork, and is comfortable sharing ideas and collaborating with others. This ideal candidate will have classroom teaching and administrative experience in the lower and middle grades.

Experience

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred along with substantive related experience and proven leadership ability.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with people in one-on-one and group situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills enable the position to deal with delicate, emotional, and sensitive conversations with various people and foster a sense of collaboration and unity among teachers, parents, and students.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, procedures, and pedagogy.
  • Uses experience, judgment, creativity, and independence to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Values the role of each constituent within the one-school framework including students, faculty, administration, and families.

Areas of Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Supports Darlington’s Standards in the following areas: Course Design/Build, Teaching Standards, Learner Standards, and Leader Standards.
  • Implement the mission of the school by supporting faculty in their efforts to empower students to learn with passion, act with integrity, and serve with respect.
  • Actively serve as a collaborative member of the Academic Leadership Team under the expectations of the Darlington Leader Standards and guidance of the senior administration.
  • Support and manage the Pre-K to 5 faculty in the steps of the Cycle of Learning and Faculty Growth Framework including classroom visits, observations, setting and accomplishing goals, and professional development..
  • Oversee the course of study, scope and sequence in Pre-K to 5; oversee curriculum maps and content/skills development for Pre-K to 5.
  • Coordinate the selection of resources, materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to support the implementation of the curriculum in Pre-K to 5.
  • Manage data collection in terms of growth measures, benchmarks, such as ERB and WrAP testing, etc. in conjunction and collaboration with the Division Director and the Director of the Teaching and Learning Center.
  • Work collaboratively with 6-12 Department Chairs to oversee curriculum maps, content/skills development, and academic resources and materials in grades 6-8.
  • Oversee the 6-8 Exploratory Course offerings and curriculum development within those offerings; work collaboratively with the 6-8 Exploratory teaching team on as they plan/teach quarterly Exploratory courses.

Student Life

  • Serve as an essential and contributing member of the Pre-K to 8 Leadership Team; collaborate with the Division Director, Director of the Teaching and Learning Center, Director of Student Activities, Pre-K to 8 Counselor, Middle School Athletic Director, Fine Arts Department Chair, and Team Leaders.
  • Serve as an essential and contributing member of the Student Support Team.
  • Work in collaboration and support of the Division Director and Director of Student Activities to plan and execute divisional events.
  • Partner with the Admissions staff to review candidate files; work with admission candidates in Pre-K to 8 and their families to provide a smooth academic transition to Darlington; work directly with new families/students in the onboarding process.
  • Support the Division Director on discipline issues including communication, data collection, and documentation.
  • Support the Division Director in the day-to-day operations of running the division; managing the daily flow of drop-off/pick-up, duty coverage, safety procedures and protocols, assemblies, parent organizations, etc.

Registrar and Additional Operational Duties

  • Create the full-academic master schedule for Pre-K to 8 with the support of the Division Director.
  • Manage class placement, course selections, and Exploratory rotations.
  • Manage and maintain Pre-K to 5 quarterly Progress Reports; Supervise and oversee the 6-8 Gradebook; coordinate and schedule Fall/Spring Conferences with support of classroom teachers and the Division Director.
  • Maintain divisional calendar; work with parent organization, Fine Arts, and Athletics to balance the schedule.
