Substitute Teacher

A Darlington substitute teacher fully supports the mission and values of the school and has the responsibility for creating the best student experience possible in the absence of the primary classroom teacher. The candidate should value the craft of teaching as much as the skills and content being learned, and would join a dynamic environment of teaching professionals who are continuously growing and collaborating. 

This person provides instruction to students by following plans and materials provided by the teacher and presenting them using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students. They provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students in a manner appropriate to the grade level. They supervise students in a variety of school-related settings and activities and follow all required procedures and practices.  

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have classroom teaching or other related experience to caring for or educating children. A relevant degree or experience in the content area and/or teaching is preferred, and is required for long-term assignments. This person should be able to work in a dynamic environment of teaching professionals.

Core Responsibilities

  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.  (* Long-Term Substitute teachers may also have some planning and assessment responsibilities as directed by the respective supervisor for the long-term assignment.)
  • Maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, and clears whiteboard, etc.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures
  • Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom
  • May perform duties usually required of absent teachers such as lunchroom duty, etc.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Knows school procedures and regulations 
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative climate across departments 
  • Monitor classroom if a teacher is teaching remotely
  • Performs other duties as needed

  • Compensation: $100 full-day/$50 half-day
