Teaching & Learning Best Practices Spotlight: Michelle Major

Michelle Major is not only an English teacher; she is also a powerful motivator and encourager. In her class of bright, eager learners, Michelle challenges students to dig deeper, to question the obvious, and to think outside the box.

Students are expected reach for BHAG, “Big Hairy Audacious Goals,” as they master much more than the basics of grammar, comprehension and writing techniques. With friendly banter and a loving sense of humor, Mrs. Major delves into the minds of her middle school students, demanding more critical thinking, creativity and written expression than they ever believed possible. She challenges them to embrace her philosophy of, “When you fail, that’s fantastic! It gives you an opportunity to try again.” Mrs. Major holds high expectations for each child, and each child rises to meet her expectations.

As the middle school team leader, Michelle also motivates and encourages her fellow teachers. As classes begin each day, she often bursts into various classrooms shouting out a friendly greeting or humorous comment to teachers and students. During team meetings, Mrs. Major dispenses information quickly and efficiently. She ensures all necessary tasks are completed while encouraging teachers to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal lives. Michelle cares about each teacher as a colleague and a friend.  Her contagious smile and outreaching style of leadership make each individual feel like a special and valued part of the team.

Maggie Inman, a seventh-grade student, beautifully summarized her feelings about this outstanding educator with simplistic eloquence.  “Mrs. Major is my favorite teacher. She’s so inspirational and always tells us to never give up, no matter what. She encourages us to let our creativity go and write stuff down. Mrs. Major has helped me grow as a writer. I’ll definitely walk out of her class having learned more than ever before.”

We thank you, Mrs. Major, for your friendship, support and, most importantly, for the difference you have made in the lives of the students at Darlington.
